Dear Customer,
On July 1st, 2008 the province of British Columbia was the first jurisdiction to begin assessing this tax to the consumption of fossil fuels, including but not limited to gasoline, diesel, propane, coal and natural gas. Effective July 1st, 2010 the Province of British Columbia will be raising the Carbon Tax rate to $20 per tonne of CO2e emissions which will continue to increase the cost of fuel, which transportation companies can no longer absorb.
For Shipments that are originating or destined from / to or within British Columbia they will be subject to a new carbon tax surcharge that will be applied on July 5th, 2010. The surcharge will apply on the freight charges at a rate of 0.5% to a maximum of $4.75 per shipment. The BC Carbon Tax Surcharge will be reflected as a separate line item on your invoices and will be adjusted annually with any Carbon Tax increases implemented by the province of British Columbia or adjusted accordingly for other jurisdictions.
For additional information on this tax you can visit the following links and articles, or for more specific questions you can contact your account executive.
Sincerely
